Getting ready for the sun? Now is the right time to do it.
There are still a few months to go before summer arrives, when we’ll finally be able to enjoy the sun, sea and sand in complete peace and quiet (hopefully!). But just as for the dreaded “dress rehearsal”, it’s also important to get ready for that “tan”.
Why are we talking about this now? Because a deeper, faster and longer-lasting tan takes time, and now is the ideal time to start preparing your skin for its first exposure to the sun. Indeed, nourished and protected skin has a greater ability to counteract the damage caused by UV rays and free radicals, while enhancing the sun’s tanning effect. This also goes for anyone with a fair complexion who struggles to get a tan!
For a number of years now we have been learning about tanning accelerators which are also known as intensifiers or activators. These are cosmetic products that act directly on melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, increasing its production. This is important not only (and not so much) in terms of aesthetics, but rather in terms of protection and health: in fact, the skin, by becoming darker, protects itself from the negative effects of the sun’s rays. If we gradually accelerate and “awaken” the activity of the melanocytes, we can ensure a more even, beautiful and, above all, safe tan, avoiding the risks of sunburn, redness and erythema.
If you’re wondering “Are activators and self-tanners the same thing?“, the answer is “Absolutely not!” Because self-tanners only work on a topical and superficial level: they contain DHA, a sugar which, by reacting with amino acids in the stratum corneum of the epidermis, colours the skin, simulating tanning; they have no protective function and are purely cosmetic.
The melanin activator is a truly extraordinary product, a genuine 3-in-1. Let’s see why.
1. BEFORE. Prepare
The right time to start using it is one to two months before summer arrives: the activator prepares the skin for tanning by achieving an even colour that creates a base, reduces exposure times and prevents sun damage. In the meantime, it also provides the right hydration, which is always a good thing.
2. DURING. Accelerate
In the summer, and applied BEFORE a sunscreen that’s suitable for your phototype, it will help you achieve a sun-kissed look in significantly shorter time. Remember to pay careful attention to the more exposed and delicate areas of the skin, such as the face and décolleté.
3. AFTER. Prolong
At the end of the summer, continue to apply the activator every day: you will keep your melanin at an optimum level, thereby preserving and prolonging your tan in a completely natural way while also reducing any flaking.
At the beginning we talked about the beach, but our advice can of course be applied to anyone spending their holidays in the mountains, going to the swimming pool or staying at home but who also wants to show off their sun-kissed and, above all, protected skin.
So, happy tanning everyone!
